Product management

The product manager owns why we build, what the future looks like, and whether it worked.

In the age of AI

Principle: We trust humans over AI to make strategic decisions and to guide the process of product creation and delivery.

AI changes how this role works. It doesn't replace the role. Here is what changes, and what stays with the human.

AI is a starter and a tool for research. The product manager verifies it through triangulation and independent, primary research of their own.
AI helps with prototyping.A human designer has the final say on everything, and depending on the situation may need to be the actual designer rather than AI.
AI is considered in product scope.AI is not a product strategy. It's a tool, an interface, a mechanism. True product strategy is about the problems to solve, whatever tool is used, and the goal is the best solution for the problem and the strategy.

What this role owns

Each role has complete authority and accountability over these areas.

  • Product vision. Why, scope, and what the future looks like.
  • Product strategy. How we will accomplish the vision.
  • Product KPIs. How we are doing on delivering the vision, adoption, and business value.
  • Product roadmap. The timeline of what we will do to implement the strategy.
  • Overarching project management. The coordination and communication to orchestrate creating, validating, and iterating on the product.
  • Outcomes. Validation, delivering on the vision, ensuring adoption, and generating business value.
