Engineering
The engineer owns how it is built and how well it holds up.
In the age of AI
Principle: We trust humans over AI to guide the development process and to make decisions about technical design, prioritization, and quality.
AI changes how this role works. It doesn't replace the role. Here is what changes, and what stays with the human.
AI writes code. The engineer sets guardrails and monitors the progress, the architectural choices, and the outcomes.
AI runs tests.Only after a human has carefully designed and validated the tests, at least as a guide.
AI reviews pull requests.Only with final checks and manual testing of key flows and regressions by the human, or at least guided by the human.
What this role owns
Each role has complete authority and accountability over these areas.
- Technology. The frameworks we employ and build with and on.
- Architecture. The models, patterns, and structures for the data and the application.
- Implementation strategy. The methodologies and approaches used to create the software.
- Quality and performance. The integrity and technical delivery of the solution, and the maintenance that keeps quality high.
